Male vs Female Skincare

So the other day I was browsing the beauty aisle, taking my time looking through the lotions and potions that were on offer. It’s something of a ritual for me, even on those days when I know that I am fully stocked at home and not looking to buy anything. My S.O. of course has very little patience for this indulgence and in frustration he asked me why I needed all these different products anyway while all he required was some shower gel and lotion.

I stuttered and stammered a bit, taken aback by his question and because I know everything (there is no way I’m going to let him catch on to the fact that this might not be entirely true), I mumbled something about hormones as I quickly made my way to the checkout line. His question stayed with me though and I found myself turning it over in my head. Did I actually need all those beauty products or was I just being extra? Could I, like him, make do with just shower gel and lotion?

Avocado oil

Avocado has recently gained superhero status thanks to the fact that it is packed full of nutrients and antioxidants. This humble fruit is actually something of an evolutionary marvel. Way back when, in the age of mammoths and other super large mammals, the avocado was attractive to these creatures as they could eat it whole and disperse its large pit seed miles away when they defecated. In this way, they ensured it’s growth through seed dispersion. Once this animals died out, the avocado should also have declined but for some reason, that didn’t happen.

I digress but I find that fact quite fascinating. The properties that make avocado so great as a superfood, are also the same properties that make it beneficial as a skincare product. Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin A, D & E along with a whole host of other nutrients like potassium, avocado oil could make for a great addition to your skincare regime.

Sun block

Waking up to sunrays streaming through the window is absolutely glorious. It brings on thoughts of a lazy brunch catching up with friends or an afternoon on the beach. As much as it is important for us to soak up those golden rays, too much of a good thing ends up being not so great for our skin.

That’s where sunscreen comes in; a way to enjoy those long summer days without suffering any of the consequences. As it turns out however, our beloved SPF might not be as safe as we think it is. It might not only be harming our health but may be negatively affecting marine life as well.

In good foam

Foaming cleansers are incredibly satisfying. Their ability to indiscriminately strip off layers of makeup, dirt and even sunscreen is almost unmatched. And of course, there is the bubbles. They are just so much fun aren’t they? It’s so awesome when they squeeze out of the nozzle and form a fragrant cloud in your hand. Like I said, incredibly satisfying. But is it possible that foaming cleansers may be just a little too good at their job?

Pillow Talk

Is your pillowcase part of your skincare regime?

There is something decadent and a little naughty about sleeping on silk sheets. The feel of slipping and sliding, encased in the lush fabric brings on fantasies of a chateau in the French Riviera.

But just like the old t-shirt that I often go to sleep in (sorry babe), my bed set tends to be pretty basic. Other than trying to match the colours of my beddings to the furniture in the room, I haven’t really paid much attention to what actually constitutes my bedsheets and pillowcases. That is of course until I discovered that my skincare regime shouldn’t be confined to the dozens of products currently lining my bathroom sink.
